'It's over the line!' Technology fails to alert Sheffield United 'goal'

VAR confusion reigned during the Aston Villa and Sheffield United match at Villa Park as home goalkeeper Orjan Nyland appeared to carry the ball behind the line, only for goal-line technology not to alert referee Michael Oliver.

A deep cross into the area was claimed by Nyland but he fell backwards while collecting the ball into his chest and fell backwards.

His momentum took him into the post and for a second his full body, still holding the ball, was positioned behind the line.

As Sheffield United players protested, Oliver merely pointed to his watch, signalling that he had not been notified that the ball was over the line and so play continued.

But the visiting players continued to press the referee as the game continued, as the commentary team on Sky questioned whether the right decision had been made.
