DFB-Pokal Top Three, 6 Feb: Kostic and Brandt star, but who didn't qualify?
Nearly two weeks ago, Frankfurt put a dent in RB Leipzig's Bundesliga title hopes with a 2-0 home victory. Now, they have proved the scourge of Julian Nagelsmann's side again, eliminating them from the DFB-Pokal with a 3-1 win.
Filip Kostic was the star, causing mayhem down the left wing and scoring two goals.
With his side already 1-0 ahead courtesy of an Andre Silva penalty, Kostic darted beyond the Red Bull defence to finish clinically across the goalkeeper.
And after Dani Olmo had pulled one back for the visitors, Kostic then strode through on the left and once again arrowed his finish into the far corner and ended the contest, again showing superb technique from that cultured left foot.
He probably should have recorded an assist, too, as he sent seven successful crosses into the box and creative one 'big' chance.
Dortmund were knocked out of the competition after a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Werder Bremen, but one player who definitely didn't deserve to be on a losing side was Julian Brandt, who was magnificent in midfield.
He provided the assists for both of Dortmund's goals. While 2-0 down, he set up record-breaking substitute Erling Haaland for a tap in with a lovely, chipped cross from the line.
The third goal from the visitors was all about the brilliance of Giovanni Reyna, curling a beauty into the top corner, but he received the pass from Brandt in the build-up after some neat work in the channel.
The former Leverkusen man sent a mammoth 14 crosses into the box and sent 42 passes into the final third.
Robert Lewandowski was in typically devastating form in the cup, as he scored two, with his head, as Bayern knocked out Hoffenheim after a 4-3 win at the Allianz Arena.
The Bavarians had already come back to 2-1 after going a goal down, and it was then that the Pole struck to make it three, rising above everyone inside the box to nod into the empty net after Thomas Muller bravely challenged the keeper in the air.
Lewandowski's next one, to make it 4-1, was a more conventional but no less impressive header as he sprinted beyond his marker to glance an attempt forcefully past the keeper.
He was pretty dominant up top, as he won 4/6 duels and 100% of his aerial duels (4/4).
HONOURABLE MENTION
In one of the games of the round, Schalke fought back from two goals down to make it 2-2 and eventually go on to win 3-2 in extra time. Key to their superb comeback was Amine Harit (8.8) who scored the vital equaliser with a slammed strike beyond the keeper from inside the box.
