Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle Player Ratings: Salah stars in frustrating draw

Robin Bairner

Liverpool saw their top-four hopes in the Premier League hit due to a 1-1 home draw with Newcastle.

Mohamed Salah scored the opening goal of the game after just three minutes, but what followed was a plethora of opportunities that neither side was able to take.

When Callum Wilson controversially had a stoppage-time goal ruled out for handball, it seemed the points were Liverpool's, yet Joe Willock struck in the 95th minute to make the Reds pay for a string of missed opportunities.

✔️ Mohamed Salah: 7.5

Once again the Egypt international striker was vital for Liverpool, scoring the opening goal of the game with a quite brilliant finish after just three minutes.

He might have sealed the match as he had a number of opportunities to add to the Reds’ advantage but for once was found lacking in front of goal.

Nevertheless, this was an impressive overall display from Salah.

✔️ Thiago Alcantara: 7.3

Generally considered to be a flop signing since arriving from Bayern Munich last summer, Thiago gave the type of performance that Liverpool signed him for.

He was their reliable base in the middle of the park before he left the game with 13 minutes to play. Rarely gave the ball away and was also incisive when he wanted to be.

Nearly set up Trent Alexander-Arnold for a quite glorious goal as he delicately volleyed a clearance to the full-back that the England man smashed just wide.

⭐ Martin Dubravka: 8.4

This match might have been a tale of missed opportunities, but Dubravka’s high rating shows the one of the main reasons for this was some excellent goalkeeping.

The Newcastle No.1 made eight saves in all and was a major source of frustration to Liverpool as they attempted to put the game to bed.

Indeed, his stops were ultimately worth a point for his side.
