Tottenham 2-1 Southampton Player Ratings: Bale and Son lead Spurs to victory

David Lynch

Tottenham marked Ryan Mason's first game in charge with victory as they came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1.

Second-half strikes from Gareth Bale and Heung-min Son helped Spurs cancel out Danny Ings' clever near-post header, which came with half an hour gone.

The London club are now within two points of a top-four place and all-important Champions League qualification.

But who helped get them there on Wednesday evening? Read on for our ratings.

Tottenham 2-1 Southampton: Player Ratings, Match Statistics

✔️ Heung-min Son: 7.3

Unfortunate to see a well-worked goal ruled out as a result of Lucas Moura obstructing the goalkeeper's view from an offside position, the Tottenham forward put things right with a coolly taken penalty.

Stepping up in the absence of Harry Kane, he put the icing on a strong performance by sealing a vital three points for his side.

✖ Lucas Moura: 6.1

Moura's contribution to seeing that goal ruled out somewhat summed up a disappointing evening.

Drafted in to lead the line in place of the injured Kane, the Brazilian provided little threat to the Southampton backline for much of the game.

⭐ Gareth Bale: 7.6

The Welshman's duel with Mohammed Salisu was one of the more interesting subplots of the game, and there is no doubting he eventually came out on top.

His finish came at a time when Southampton might have thought themselves capable of seeing out a one-goal win and was brilliantly taken.
