Arsenal 0-1 Olympiacos Player Ratings: Recalled Aubameyang flops

Robin Bairner

Arsenal are through to the Europa League quarter-finals but turned in a thoroughly unconvincing performance as they were defeated 1-0 by Olympiacos at home.

The Gunners, however, had established a 3-1 advantage in Greece, and it was upon that they leaned upon as Youssef El Arabi’s strike decided the game in north London.

Their passage was eased through late on as Ousseynou Ba was dismissed with eight minutes left.

✔️ DAVID LUIZ: 7.1

David Luiz has often been a maligned presence in the Arsenal side, but he was their outstanding figure as they progressed.

The pressure on the Arsenal rearguard was not exactly intense, but the experienced Brazilian was on hand to deal with much of the danger they faced.

Indeed, he showed his fortitude when he blocked a free kick in a dangerous area.

❌ PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG: 6.0

Was not in the squad for the Tottenham game at the weekend – and he may as well not have been for this fixture either given the influence he had on proceedings.

Enjoyed Arsenal’s best chance in the second half when he sprinted clear on goal. Unchallenged, though, he dinked the ball wide of Jose Sa in the visiting goal. A clever flick towards the end might have brought an equaliser, but this was a rare highlight in what was a disappointing display.

⭐ JOSE SA: 7.3

Had a difficult night in the first leg but went some way to making amends in this encounter as Olympiacos picked up a victory that they will long remember.

His goal was hardly peppered with shots, but he dealt well with what came his way, with his highlight a fine stop from Aubameyang with just a few minutes left. This preserved Olympiacos’ clean sheet and their victory – a just outcome on a disappointing night for the Gunners.
