Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola shared his belief that Joao Cancelo 'has to improve' despite his impressive performance in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Portuguese laid on the assists for both City goals, contested 17 duels, and completed four dribbles in an outstanding showing in Budapest.

He has emerged as one of the star men for Guardiola's men this season after struggling to make an impact in the immediate aftermath of his arrival from Juventus.

However, his manager insists there are still areas of the 26-year-old's game that he would like to iron out.

He told BT Sport: "He has to improve sometimes and know better to not make risks, but he's so clever and gives us something special to make us play.

"[I am] so happy for his two assists in the final third."

City recorded their 19th consecutive victory in all competitions as they brushed Monchengladbach aside.

But, when asked if his side might be favourites to go on and win the Champions League, Guardiola replied: "When I see Bayern I wouldn't think so. I say again, my target is West Ham.

"For a long time we thinking every game we try to win from Cheltenham to Old Trafford. Next challenge is West Ham at 12.30.

"If the people say that we have to accept it but [we are] the team who only arrives once in the semi final in ten years. If they say can win it, no problem."
