Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that central defender Joel Matip is expected to be out of action for at least another three weeks.

The Cameroon defender sustained an adductor strain during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom and missed his side’s subsequent 0-0 draw with Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

When asked about Matip’s situation after the clash at St James Park, Klopp said: “The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, [he will be out for] around about three weeks.”

Matip’s latest injury will only add further grief to an upsetting season for the 29-year-old star, who has only managed eight of Liverpool 16 Premier League fixtures to date.

Such injuries and absences from Matip couldn’t have come at a worse time for Klopp’s squad, following long-term injuries to Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk.

As such, Klopp has had to be creative with his options in the centre of defence, with central midfielder Fabinho filling in for much of the season alongside younger players like Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams.
