Edinson Cavani facing ban after FA charge for Instagram post
Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani could be facing a ban after being charged with misconduct by the FA over a social media post.
The Uruguayan shared the post on his Instagram account after scoring twice in the Red Devils' recent come-from-behind win at Southampton.
He subsequently deleted the message and offered an apology after it was pointed out that the content could be considered racially insensitive.
However, Cavani has not avoided censure from English football's governing body.
An FA statement read: "Edinson Cavani has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a social media post on Thursday 29 November 2020.
"It is alleged that, contrary to FA Rule E3.1, a comment posted on the Manchester United FC player’s Instagram page was insulting and/or abusive and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.
"It is further alleged that the comment constitutes an “Aggravated Breach”, which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin."
The 33-year-old has until January 4 to respond to the charge.
New FA rules introduced ahead of this season state that any player found guilty of discrimination will face a minimum three-match ban.
