Barcelona’s teenage starlet Ansu Fati underwent surgery on Monday to repair the torn meniscus he suffered during the 5-2 win over Real Betis, and will miss four months of action, the club have confirmed.

The 18-year-old was forced off at half-time in the Liga clash at Camp Nou as Barca returned to winning ways after four league matches without a victory.

Barcelona confirmed on their official club website that the surgery had been a complete success but the forward is facing a long spell out of action.

Fati had already withdrawn from Spain’s squad for the UEFA Nations League games this month, while he will also miss the remainder of Barcelona’s Champions League group stage campaign, and given the complexity of the calendar will likely miss a large chunk of the season-defining matches.

It is a big blow for both player and club, with Fati having scored five goals and made two assists in just 10 matches this season so far. The player has made a sparkling start to the season and is fast becoming one of Barcelona's key players.

Barcelona currently find themselves off the pace in La Liga and will be hoping that Fati’s absence doesn’t hinder their attempts to close the gap on the likes of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
