Messi sends get well soon message to Maradona

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has sent a get well soon message to Argentina legend Diego Maradona.

The 1986 World Cup winner is now in recovery after undergoing successful surgery on his brain, according to his doctor Leopoldo Luque.

And while the operation seems to have been a success, Messi has passed on his wishes to his fellow footballing great via an Instagram post.

"Diego, all the strength in the world. My family and I want to see you well as soon as possible. A hug from the heart," he posted.

At the start of this week, Maradona was admitted to hospital in La Plata after complaining of dehydration and anaemia.

After observation, he was subsequently transferred to Olivos Clinic in Buenos Aires, where he had surgery on Tuesday.

"I was able to evacuate the haematoma successfully and Diego tolerated the surgery very well," Luque told the media after his patent had undergone the procedure.

"Diego is under control. He has a small drain [to remove fluid] that we are planning to take out tomorrow. His stay at the hospital will depend on how his condition evolves.

"But the start of his recovery was great. The way he reacted after the surgery is promising."

Maradona is recognised as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, with his accomplishments including powering Argentina to a World Cup win in 1986 and Napoli to the Serie A title in 1987 and 1990.

Since retiring he has turned his attentions to coaching, and has led Argentina and Racing Club among other clubs in the past.

He is currently head coach of Gimnasia de La Plata.

The 60-year-old has suffered from health issues in the past. He has fought drug and alcohol addiction, he has had two gastric bypass surgeries and also had to be treated for internal bleeding of the stomach.
