Confirmed: Van Dijk requires surgery on ACL injury and likely out for season
Liverpool have confirmed that defender Virgil van Dijk is set to undergo surgery on an ACL injury and could miss the remainder of the 2020/21 season, following a challenge from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
The Everton goalkeeper lunged into the Dutch defender in the first half catching him on the knee and forcing him off the pitch. No further action was taken against the England No. 1.
Liverpool have requested information from the Premier League as to the VAR review process following the incident and that of Jordan Henderson's late goal which was ruled out for an offside against Sadio Mane.
And Van Djik and team-mate Thiago Alcantara, who was also the victim of a dangerous challenge from Richarlison which led to a red card, were both sent for scans to assess the scale of the damage.
Liverpool have now confirmed on social media that the defender is set to undergo surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, which usually has a recuperation period of 6-8 months.
Further news is expected on Thiago in the coming days, though it is thought that the Spaniard's injury is not as serious as his team-mate.
