Is Thiago reversing his decision to leave Bayern?

Martin Macdonald

Thiago Alcantara has claimed that he has never definitively said he will leave Bayern Munich this summer, fuelling speculation that he may stay in Germany.

It was widely thought that the Spaniard, who has a single year remaining on his current Bayern deal, would move on this summer, with Liverpool in pole position to land the player for a fee of €30m.

Even boss Hansi Flick has been working on the assumption that he will move on, saying: "I assume that he will leave us. We haven't had another conversation now, I think his decision has been made.“

But the 29-year-old, who is currently on international duty, was keen to stress to journalists that he has made no decision on his future.

He said: "I have not said at any time that I am leaving. Every year you put me in a different team.

“I am on the sidelines, my future is tomorrow’s game right now."

With Barcelona thought to be interested in Georginio Wijnaldum, Liverpool have looked to Thiago as the ideal replacement.

But the player's comments suggest that nothing has been decided and there could yet be another twist in the transfer saga.
